A recent study published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry compared efficacies of five drugs including lactulose, probiotics, rifaximin, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), and L-Ornithine L-aspartate (LOLA) in treating minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). This was a network meta-analysis which searched Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase databases for any existing data on the above-mentioned drugs from inception to February 2018, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Overall, 10 RCTs with 826 MHE patients were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that when compared to placebo, lactulose, and probiotics had better efficacy in reducing ammonia serum levels and total sickness impact profile (SIP) score. ALC had was found to be efficacious in lowering serum level of ammonia and increasing the serum level of albumin. Meanwhile, rifaximin and LOLA had better efficacy in reducing total SIP score in MHE patients.
